A Piano Lesson Kids Love — Engaging, Playful, and Fun

We all need support through the most important period of musical education: the beginning

I’m here to provide that support for my students. Piano lessons are so beneficial to children and adults, and I believe that music lessons should be an exciting journey where creativity thrives, and curiosity leads the way.

My teaching philosophy blends gamification, improvisation, and exploration to create a fun and engaging environment where kids feel inspired to learn. I encourage students to compose and experiment to express themselves while building a solid foundation in technique and musical understanding.

Every child learns differently, so I adapt my piano lessons to fit each student’s interests and learning styles, whether that means diving into pop music studies, exploring improvisation, or mastering a favorite tune. Through interactive games and playful challenges, I help kids develop confidence, discipline, and a love for music that lasts a lifetime.

By meeting students where they are and guiding them to discover their own musical voice, I make piano lessons a joyful and rewarding experience.

Ms. Sara, Piano Teacher

I have been teaching for over 7 years and love taking beginning students from the early learning stages through to proficiency.

I have 15 years of classical piano training, started at age 5 when I began taking lessons from my grandmother, who was also a piano teacher. I eventually moved onto taking classes at my local college from the professors there. I have played the piano for 35 years now.

I currently teach piano lessons out of my private studio in Huntsville, AL and at Alabama Music Academy.

Ms. Sara likes to wear a pair of her Minnie ears for lessons with her young students–she has a lot of different ones, and likes that these lessons give her a chance to wear them!

Sara’s Philosophy

I believe in following the “vibrant music teaching” philosophy championed by Nicola Cantan, incorporating creative exploration and reinforcing concepts through play-based learning. Studies have shown that children learn best through play–it creates a solid memory pathway to help learning stick.

I aim to achieve this by incorporating games that reinforce different concepts being learned, from piano key names to key signatures, and having a large selection of gamified and interactive theory worksheets to make theory seem less like a chore.

Piano Lesson Structure

Key Parts of a Piano Lesson

A perfect lesson doesn’t always happen because different concepts need more work than others or something comes up and derails the plan so we have to go with the flow–but I try to include these 4 areas in each lesson

Creativity

We achieve this a few different ways, but mostly through improvisation within different key signatures or through song composing projects. For younger students we also create a “terms & symbols” catalogue in our binders.

Music

You can’t become a pianist without learning how to read music and learning new songs, so every lesson we review songs. Then we add new ones to increase the student’s repertoire so they have a large catalogue to choose from.

Rhythm & Movement

Piano students tend to lack strong rhythm skills because they don’t often play with others, but rhythm is incredibly important. I address this with movement and rhythm building challenges, as well as regular in-class duets.

Theory & Technique

As boring as theory sounds, it’s vital. But I do my best to make theory and technique fun through a large library of games and fun worksheets that are themed with a kid-friendly cast of characters to make learning fun.
