What makes your studio different?
We specialize in playful, creative learning that keeps kids motivated and engaged. Our lessons include games, improvisation, pop studies, composing, and more—so every child can discover their own musical voice. 🎵
I teach all genres of music, from classical to pop to blues. This allows my students to become well-rounded pianists while still letting us explore the music they love.
What benefits do you get from learning piano?
I’m so glad you asked! Learning piano offers so much more than just playing songs! Piano lessons build focus, perseverance, and confidence. Students strengthen their memory and listening skills, while also developing fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.
Music study—even just once a week—activates both sides of the brain, helping kids grow academically and emotionally. At Playful Notes Piano, we teach through creativity and play, which means students are actively engaged, learning to express themselves, and having fun as they build a skill they’ll carry for life.
Whether your child becomes a concert pianist or just plays for fun, piano lessons provide a strong foundation in music and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

What age should my child start piano lessons?
At Playful Notes Piano Studio, I welcome young musicians starting at age 4 in our preschool music class. This is a general musicianship class (I use Mini Musicians, created by the wonderful Nicola Cantan) with a piano focus, designed to introduce rhythm, melody, listening skills, and playful exploration of the keyboard. There are no weekly practice assignments for my preschool music students.
Once your child completes the preschool class and demonstrates readiness, they’ll transition into regular piano instruction. This gentle, developmentally appropriate path helps young learners build confidence, coordination, and a solid musical foundation right from the start. 🎶
Do I need a piano at home?
Yes, you must have an instrument to practice on. Regular acoustic pianos are always best, but a good weighted keyboard or digital piano can suffice for the beginning years. For more information and advice on pianos and digital pianos, click here to read my piano buying guide.
How much practicing is required?
Great question! Regular practice is how students make the most of their piano lesson investment—not just financially, but in terms of growth, confidence, and enjoyment.
In the first few years, parent involvement is key (click here to read all about why parent involvement is so vital). Young students need support at home to help structure their practice time, stay motivated, and remember what to work on. Think of it like coaching a sport or helping with reading—it’s a team effort at first!
A good rule of thumb is to multiply your child’s age by 3 to get an ideal daily practice time:
1. A 5-year-old = about 15 minutes per day
2. An 8-year-old = about 24 minutes per day
3. A 15-year-old = about 45 minutes per day
Rather than one long session, try breaking practice into shorter chunks throughout the day. This keeps focus fresh, avoids frustration, and makes practice a positive part of daily life—just like brushing teeth or reading a book.
And remember: even 5 focused minutes is more valuable than 30 distracted ones. Progress is built one small step at a time!
How do I enroll my child?
Just head to our Contact Page or scan the QR code on one of our business cards. You’ll fill out a short interest form, and we’ll be in touch to discuss availability, lesson times, and how to get started. Spots tend to fill up quickly—especially for fall—so we recommend enrolling early.
How much are piano lessons?
We offer two lesson lengths–30 minutes and 60 minutes–and monthly payment options for each. You can sign up for auto-pay through your My Music Staff account. You can find full details—including our registration fee and what’s included in tuition—on our Tuition & Policies page. The monthly tuition is evenly divided across the academic year and includes all books, supplemental materials, and studio events.
What lesson length should I choose?
30 minute lessons are perfect for pre-k mini musicians and younger students just getting started in the “primer” stage of books. 60 minute lessons are ideal for students in level 1 and beyond–this gives us enough time to explore technique, theory, composing, improvisation, and repertoire regularly.
If 60 minute lessons don’t fit in your schedule or your budget, that’s completely fine! 30 minute lessons will work just fine for all skill levels, too. We’ll still learn all the same things. 30 minute music lessons are better than no music lessons–your brain and body will benefit just as much!
What books do I need?
Books are included in your tuition and registration fee. I will purchase books as we progress and as your student needs them. I use lots of different books and methods depending on the student, their level, and their interests. I’m always keeping my eye on new piano methods and interesting books that I think could benefit my students.
Your only job when it comes to books is to make sure the books and piano binder make it to piano every week. Please don’t leave it to your child to remember all by themselves–piano lessons are a team effort and if books are forgotten, we lose valuable lesson time. 😊
What do we need to bring to lessons?
Each student needs their books (provided by me after registration), their assigned piano folder or binder, and a positive attitude. 😊 A pencil is handy, too! Should kids forget their books or binders, photocopies of their music can be provided at the cost of $0.50 per copy.
Where are lessons held?
Lessons are held in my home in Owens Cross Roads/Hampton Cove. I have a dedicated piano room with a grand piano for my students to learn on, as well as a digital piano for me to use to play with them and do duets.
Can parents sit in on lessons?
Some students feel more comfortable knowing a parent is nearby, and you’re always welcome to stay during your child’s lesson. That said, many young learners focus best when they’re working directly with me, without the distraction of a familiar face in the room. If you choose to stay, I kindly ask that you relax out of sight in the living room so your child can direct their full attention to our lesson time. This small bit of space often helps them build confidence, independence, and a stronger teacher-student connection.
Please note, if you have other children with you who might be noisy or rowdy, I ask that you leave for the lesson so the student can focus without wondering what they’re missing out on with their siblings. 😊
Do you teach adults?
We sure do! Both beginning adults and adults looking to refresh their piano skills are more than welcome! Do you just need an accountability buddy/teacher? We got you.
🐾 Is your studio pet-friendly?
Yes! Playful Notes Piano Studio is located in a pet-friendly home with two hypoallergenic cats (my husband is allergic) and one friendly black lab. While the animals are not in the lesson space during teaching hours (minus one cat, who likes to sit nearby in the foyer and listen), families should be aware of their presence in the home.
If your child has allergies or concerns, please let me know in advance—I’ll put the animals away. However, if the allergies are severe, we might not be the studio for you.
